Tottenham Green Update – 8 June

Work continues to get the pools at Tottenham Green Pools and Fitness back up and running following a major electrical fault caused by flooding in the plant room.

Council engineers have been conducting detailed surveys of the drainage systems around the leisure centre to help identify the source of the water ingress. Following this work, we are able to provide the following update:

  • Our specialist engineers have successfully identified and mapped out the clean and foul water systems on the exterior of the building. That work has included establishing how and where water systems inside the building discharge into Thames Water sewers externally – thereby supplementing existing Thames Water records. This has given us new insight into potential sources of water which flooded the plant room, causing the initial electrical fault.
  • Through this investigatory work, we identified a blockage which has been cleared. The drainage systems surrounding the leisure centre now no longer hold water unnecessarily. Now that the blockage has been cleared, we have asked Fusion Lifestyle to drain out the pools until they are ready to be brought back into use.
  • One part of the external drainage system that is expected to hold a certain amount of water is a deep wet well. When water accumulates to a certain level, an extraction pump discharges the water into the wider external system. As part of the testing conducted by our specialist engineers, we drained down the water but new water then entered this deep pit from unexpected sources. We took samples and are now testing this water to try to determine where it may be coming from, which will clarify the next steps required to fix this issue.

Cllr Sarah Williams, Cabinet Member for Housing Services, Private Renters and Planning, said:

“We share residents’ frustration at the ongoing closure of Tottenham Green pools. We continue to put in significant resources to get to the bottom of the issue and get this vital facility fully back up and running.

“The water and electrical systems we are dealing with are extremely complicated, but thanks to the work of our engineers in excavating and surveying the drainage system we now have a much better understanding of the points at which water could be entering the plant room.

“This puts us in a better position to be able to respond if a similar issue recurs in the future, and also means we are now closer to ascertaining the cause of the flooding, which will allow us to move onto the next stage towards reopening the centre.

“Unfortunately due to the highly complex nature of the repairs required, the reopening is still several months away. We continue to push Fusion Lifestyle to provide a detailed and realistic plan for repairs, and will update residents as soon as we have an agreed timeframe in place.”
