Haringey opens its doors to history

Residents are invited to delve into the borough’s rich history as Haringey will feature in this year’s Open House Festival which takes place across London.

Some of Haringey’s most iconic buildings, houses, council homes and community spaces will be accessible for visitors to explore and learn about the unique architecture and design. The event will take place from Wednesday 5th September to Sunday 17th September 2023.

Ferry Lane Estate, which was designed and built by the Greater London Council (GLC) was transferred to Haringey Council in April 1982, will be open to visit. The iconic development has three main design principles: a focus on green spaces, low-to-medium-rise blocks (designed to be more welcoming than high-rise blocks) and parking spaces distributed across the estate to avoid car dominance.

The residents’ association of the Ferry Lane Estate will be on site to give a tour of some of the homes which have strengthened the residents’ community through architecture and, in time contributed to the borough’s history. Tours of this specific development will take place on 8 and 9 September.

Cllr Ruth Gordon, Cabinet Member for Housebuilding, Placemaking and Local Economy, said: “This is a great opportunity for residents far and near to experience Haringey’s rich culture and heritage.

“As we continue to invest in our borough with new council homes, improved transport facilities, and enhanced green spaces – all of which will boost the local economy and create a desirable place for people to live - we hope to contribute to Haringey’s rich architectural legacy.”

Throughout each of the tours around Haringey, residents will be given the opportunity to understand more about the council’s ambitious house-building programme which aims to build 3000 new council homes by 2031.

Work has already begun or completed on more than 2,000 homes across the borough. With more than 12,500 people on the council waiting list, building new homes is a key priority.
