Overcoming drug and alcohol misuse

Our Haringey community turned out in force on Friday to celebrate recovery from drug and alcohol misuse in the annual Recovery Pride event at Bruce Grove in Tottenham.

Recovery Pride is the annual celebration of those residents who have used Haringey Council commissioned services to overcome drug and alcohol addiction. An awards ceremony celebrated individual and group achievements, as well as therapeutic services, food and drink, music, games, and other help and support services were on offer.

Over the last 18 months, Haringey Council has engaged with over 100 drug and alcohol users and helped just under half of this number into employment. Over 80% of those who have gained employment have stayed in their role for over six months. Others, with the support of the council, have gone on to access further training or education, or accessed voluntary work to build up skills and confidence.

One service user, Sarah (name changed for privacy), is a recent service user at The Grove Drug Treatment Service, after self-referring during a period of drug misuse and homelessness. Through a comprehensive series of counselling, therapy, and support groups, Sarah has learnt valuable coping mechanisms, relapse prevention techniques, and regained control over her life. The Grove connected Sarah to local employment service Haringey Works, who provided specialist support to get her into employment. Sarah is now fully housed, financially stable, and in employment.

Cllr Lucia das Neves, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Wellbeing said "Recovery Pride is our way of us recognising the huge and brave efforts of people who are working to overcome addiction. We’re proud of everyone who has come through any Haringey service to find help, support, and treatment. It is so important that all residents who need support feel they are able to come forwards, and that they know they will be met in line with our values with care, support, and a dedicated team of experts.”
