An exciting year-long programme of activities and events to celebrate and promote Black history and heritage is getting underway in Haringey.
Starting in October and continuing throughout the year, Black History Haringey 365 is an annual programme to highlight the fascinating and diverse history of Black communities in Haringey and promote Black history education throughout the borough.
This year’s programme reflects the national theme for Black History Month 2023, ‘Saluting our Sisters’, shining a spotlight on the crucial role that Black women have played in shaping history, inspiring change, and building communities.
Some highlights of this year’s programme include:
- A reggae choir recital at Bernie Grant Arts Centre
- Screenings of Shocka’s film ‘Me, My Music and Mental Health’ at Muswell Hill Everyman
- African Paper Necklace crafting sessions at Haringey Libraries
- Discussion of Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche’s books at Coombes Croft library book club
- A special event to celebrate Judith Jacob at a special event at Bruce Castle Museum
- Black History walking tours in different neighbourhoods in Haringey with walking tour guide, Avril Nanton

October is always an exciting time of year in Haringey as we take the opportunity to celebrate Black History Month. This year is particularly special as the national theme is ‘Saluting our Sisters’. As the first woman of colour to serve as leader of the council, I am inspired by the many Black women who have shaped our borough over the decades, and I know just how important it is to highlight the massive contribution they have made.
In Haringey, Black history is everyone’s history. We know that Black history and heritage is too important to highlight for only one month of the year. That’s why for some years now our Black History Haringey 365 programme has ensured that Black history stays at the top of the agenda in our borough all year round.
With so many activities and events taking place right across the borough throughout October and beyond, I hope everyone in Haringey takes the opportunity to reflect on the importance of Black history for our borough and the whole of the UK.
