Haringey secures over 40 new council homes

Haringey’s ambitious house-building programme to deliver 3000 council homes by 2031 has moved another step closer after the council approved the acquisition of 46 new homes.

Following the approval by members at a cabinet meeting last night (TUES), the scheme will form part of the much-anticipated Clarendon gas works development and will include a mixture of two-, three- and four-bedroom homes as well as a commercial space.

Each of the homes will also meet the Mayor’s housing design standards and support the council’s vision to reduce carbon missions and tackle the climate emergency. The heat and hot water for this building will be provided by the Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant and will therefore use less energy and reduce the costs for residents.

In addition to this, the scheme will also deliver a 71% biodiversity net gain with increased tree cover, parkland, linear habitats and native planting and green roofs.

With over 12,500 people on the council’s housing waiting list, the new high quality, sustainable and affordable homes will offer residents the chance to move out of temporary, overcrowded or unsuitable accommodation and create a new life for them and their families.

Cllr Ruth Gordon, Cabinet Member for Housebuilding, Placemaking and Local Economy, said:

We made it a priority to deliver 3,000 new council homes and we are sticking to our word. With almost 200 homes completed and more than 2,000 homes underway, we are extremely proud of how far we have come and that we are on track to achieve our target.

Working with St William, we want to ensure those on our housing waiting list – many of whom are living in overcrowded, insecure accommodation – are offered a place they can call home. A council home offers stability, safety and the chance to put down real roots in the community.

Having an opportunity to acquire such a large number of family sized homes – the scheme includes 17 4-bed properties and 19 three-bed homes – will be of enormous benefit in relieving some of the pressure on our housing waiting list.

Whilst building new homes is imperative to achieving this, we know how important it is to provide homes that are economical, sustainable and most importantly, keep costs down for our residents. These homes will help to achieve that and provide the families that move in beautifully landscaped communal areas and top of the range play areas for the children.

Laying the foundations will enable people of all ages to build a successful life of their own as well as create a legacy for future generations.

The project will be delivered by St William Homes LLP, a subsidiary of the Berkeley Group.
