The Mayor of London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner visited Haringey to see the council’s 26th School Street in action and witness the way its transforming journeys for hundreds of children.
Will Norman was joined by Leader Cllr Peray Ahmet, Deputy Leader Cllr Mike Hakata and Cabinet Member Cllr Ruth Gordon for the visit to Noel Park Primary to meet parents, teachers and children benefiting from the Streets for People initiative.
School Streets encourage more children to travel to and from school on foot, bike or scooter in a safe, fun and active way, cutting air pollution and creating a more pleasant environment at the school gates.
The scheme is part of Adaptive Wood Green, a set of projects awarded by the Mayor of London to tackle air pollution, promote active travel to school, and improve facilities on offer within local green spaces.
The group toured Wood Green to see other parts of the programme, including the footpath and road improvements at Mayes Road.
Haringey has one of the fastest growing School Streets programmes and aims to increase the number to 61 by 2026 as part of its ambitious Streets for People programme.
At those already introduced, the number of children walking and cycling is up, while traffic has reduced by 42 per cent and vehicle emissions (NOx) are down by 26 per cent.
Only people walking, cycling and wheeling, and those with vehicle exemption permits, are eligible to enter the zone while the School Street is in operation.
