The London New Years Day Parade is one of the highlights of the annual cultural calendar, attracting over 10,000 participants from the USA, UK, Europe and beyond to delight over 500,000 spectators on the streets of central London, as well as 500 million TV viewers worldwide.
Starting at Piccadilly at 12 noon on Wednesday 1 January, the parade takes in some of London’s most famous sites, including Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Horseguard’s Parade, Downing Street and the Palace of Westminster.
Haringey will be taking part in the parade for the first time in 5 years, with the borough’s float demonstrating the vibrancy, diversity and unity of the borough. It will feature young singers from Haringey Vox Choir, Caribbean sounds from Pan Nation Steel Orchestra, and modern dance performances from Streetz Ahead, as well as young sportspeople from the Tottenham Hotspur Academy and Borough of Basketball.
The borough’s delegation will be led by the Mayor of Haringey, Cllr Sue Jameson, who will be adorned in stunning Mayoral robes produced specially for the occasion by Quilt Club – a community initiative that celebrates Haringey’s rich history as a centre for textile design by bringing residents together to create vibrant fabric creations.
Cllr Jameson said:
“I am incredibly excited that Haringey will be taking part in this year’s London New Years Day Parade. It’s the first time our borough has been present at the event for 5 years, and it’s really fitting given that we will be marking our 60th anniversary in 2025.
“We’re planning an absolutely breathtaking float, and I’m so grateful to our brilliant young singers, steel pannists, dancers and sportspeople for giving their time to represent our borough, as well as to Quilt Club for producing beautiful new mayoral robes specially for the occasion, and to our sponsors for making it all possible.
“In Haringey we’re so proud to be a diverse and vibrant community where everyone is welcome, and our float will be a great opportunity to share that with the world.
“I hope that many Haringey residents join us on the day to support our borough’s fabulous performers and enjoy a great day out in central London. I can’t think of a better way to start the new year!”
Haringey’s float is being generously sponsored by Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, Festival Republic, and Medchem Pharmacy on Green Lanes. Quilt Club’s new mayoral robes are being created as part of the Haringey Feast legacy project, supported by The Mayor of London.
Haringey will be one of 15 London Boroughs taking part in the event, with the most impressive delegation being awarded a share of the £50,000 charity prize pot. Since the first Parade in 1987, LNYDP has raised well over £2 million for London charities.
It is free to attend the parade as a spectator, though paid-for grandstand tickets are also available. Find out more and plan your visit at https://lnydp.com/
