A recent survey revealed overwhelming support for tougher measures, with 96% of residents backing fines for fly-tipping and 94% supporting penalties for dog fouling and littering.
Businesses and community organisations also expressed strong agreement, with 83% in favour of penalties for fly-tipping.
As a result, 15 additional environmental enforcement officers will join the council's existing team and be deployed across the borough.
Their role includes issuing Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) for offences such as:
- Littering
- Dog fouling
- Fly-tipping
- Graffiti
- Duty of care breaches for domestic and commercial waste
- Failure to produce a Waste Transfer Note
- Unlicensed skips/building materials on highways
- Non-compliance with waste receptacle notices
Cllr Seema Chandwani, Cabinet Member for Tackling Inequality and Resident Services, said:
We regularly engage with our residents to understand the challenges they face, and the cleanliness of our borough emerged as a great concern, and I couldn’t agree more.
Haringey is home to iconic landmarks, beautiful parks, and a vibrant community that residents deeply care about. Unfortunately, a small minority spoil this for others, and it’s time to take further action.
These additional roles underscore our commitment to keeping Haringey clean and holding those who pollute our borough accountable. By working together with our residents, we’ll ensure everyone plays their part in protecting our community.
The council urges everyone to dispose of waste responsibly and report offenders to help keep Haringey rubbish-free.
