Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Environment and Transport Cllr Mike Hakata joined Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure Cllr Emily Arkell, teachers and pupils to celebrate the occasion at one of Haringey’s newest School Streets at Bounds Green Infants and Juniors today (22 September 2025).
This scheme and another at Welbourne Primary in Tottenham launched at the beginning of this term are transforming the start and end of the school day and take the borough’s tally to an impressive 35 School Streets.
Cllr Hakata said:
World Car Free Day is an important moment to celebrate our expanding School Streets programme and the part it plays in building a fairer, greener borough.
School Streets are transforming journeys for thousands of children who are able to travel to school in cleaner air and streets safe for walking, cycling and wheeling.
I’m delighted we’ve introduced schemes at Welbourne and Bounds Green and two more communities are getting the opportunity to benefit from a healthier and active school day.
In total, more than 17,000 children at 44 educational establishments are benefitting from pedestrian and cycles zones spanning almost 12.6km during drop-off and pick-up times.
School Streets encourage more children to travel to and from school on foot, bike or scooter in a safe, fun and active way, cutting air pollution and creating a more pleasant environment at the school gates.
Only people walking, cycling and wheeling, and those with vehicle exemption permits, are eligible to enter the zone while the School Street is in operation.
People who live or have a business inside the schemes can apply for free exemptions here.
