The event took place at Wolves Lane Centre on Tuesday night with an evening of speeches, panel discussion, poetry and live music.

Mayor of Haringey, Cllr Ahmed Mahbub, Leader of the Council, Cllr Peray Ahmet, MP for Southgate and Wood Green, Bambos Charalambous MP, and Deputy CEO of the Ubele Initative Sarah Ebanja spoke at the event which also included a panel discussion chaired by Haringey Council’s Director for Culture and Communities, Kenneth Tharp.

This featured writer Nels Abbey, co-founder of Black Rootz, Paulette Henry, and Chair of the George Padmore Institute, Roxy Harris. The event closed with performances from poet Dernell Appleton and musicians from Pan Nation Steel Orchestra.

Reflecting the national Black History Month theme of “Standing firm in power and pride”, the panel discussion focused on the legacy of the Black Parents Movement, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
In collaboration with the George Padmore Institute, Haringey Council has created a series of resources celebrating the history of this trailblazing movement which can be accessed on our website.
The event celebrated the official launch of Black History Haringey 365, the borough’s annual programme celebrating Black history and heritage.
Starting in October and continuing throughout the year, a wide range of events and activities engage people of all ages and
interests across the borough in Black history education.
