Amid reports of rising Islamophobia across the UK, the month of November provides an important opportunity for us all to learn more about the many ways that racial and religious prejudice, discrimination and bigotry can manifest in society and how we can work together to challenge it.

There is no place for hate of any kind in Haringey.

Haringey Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, Cllr Ajda Ovat, said:

As a council, our message is really clear and simple – we will not accept Islamophobia or any hate crime in any of its forms. There is zero tolerance to any form of hate crime and zero tolerance to any form of racism.

It’s really important for us to engage with all our Muslim communities in the borough and we have regular engagement via the fantastic Haringey Multi-Faith Forum, as well as with our Muslim community leaders here.

This month shouldn’t just be a time to raise awareness about discrimination and prejudice though. We will also be celebrating the culture and traditions of all of our Muslim communities.

Haringey’s greatest asset is the sheer diversity within our borough. We fundamentally believe in it as it’s what makes us stronger and we will continue to celebrate it.

If a hate crime is happening and you or anyone else is in danger, dial 999. If it’s not an emergency or you want to report a hate crime after it’s occurred, call 101. You can also report offensive graffiti.

If you experience or witness anti-Muslim hate, you can report it to the British Muslim Trust by phoning or WhatsApping their FREEPHONE number: 0808 172 3524 (Monday-Friday, 10am-3pm).

You can also email them at any time, while form and live chat options are available too. It’s a Muslim-led and safe service, where you’ll speak to a trained advisor in confidence.

Find out more about Haringey Council’s work to tackle hate crime and how to report it.
