Here are some useful tips for anyone starting a supported internship and what to expect once you begin your journey.
Communication
Always communicate with your mentor or job coach if you are struggling with your work placement because they are there to help you move forward with confidence.
If you feel unsure about what to do, ask your mentor(s) for clarification rather than remaining stuck.
If things become too intense, message your job coach because they are there to support you.
Goals and ambitions
Set yourself some goals for what you need to achieve to get a job. This helps you understand the skills and qualities you need during your internship.
Even if you do not have clear goals yet, a supported internship gives you guidance from job coaches and tutors to help you find your pathway for the future.
Never give up on your dreams and aspirations. The more support you have, the easier it becomes to turn big goals into real achievements.
Wellbeing
Never be afraid to talk to someone you trust. You have the right to express how you feel, and doing so can make a positive difference for your colleagues and create a safer environment for everyone.
If you feel like you cannot cope, do not hesitate to take timeouts or use your coping strategies, such as listening to music or getting fresh air outside. These small steps help keep your mind clear and focused.
Always remember taking out all your negative emotions on someone else does not help you or others. Instead, focus on healthy ways to manage your feelings so everyone, including you, stays safe.
