Shopfront improvements

Part of: Improving Turnpike Lane

The last few years have been an incredibly difficult time for shop owners across the country. We want to work with Turnpike Lane businesses to create a shopping area that encourages people to visit more often, stay longer and return to Turnpike Lane again and again.

To ensure that we achieve a great visual impact on Turnpike Lane, we want to help make the street more welcoming for residents, commuters and shoppers through a shopfront improvement project.

There are 2 parts to this project – large-scale shopfront improvements and smaller-scale shopfront improvements.

High-quality and exciting shopfronts can:

  • have a big impact on attracting people to shopping areas
  • encourage people to stay longer in the area and return again

Turnpike Lane shopfront transformations will bring energy and excitement to the street and attract new and old shoppers to spend more time and money locally.

This project is supported by the Turnpike Lane Traders Association.

Large-scale shopfront improvements

We have identified priority areas for large-scale shopfront improvements that will help make the street more welcoming for residents, commuters and shoppers. These areas are concentrated around entrances onto Turnpike Lane and areas that experience high footfall. We have already contacted businesses in these key areas.

For businesses to participate and benefit from the large-scale shopfront improvements, we will be seeking the permission(s) of both the business leaseholders and freeholders. The majority of the costs of the works and installation will be covered by us. We will be expecting businesses to contribute up to 20% of the total cost.

For businesses within priority areas we will:

  • pay for 80% of the improvement works
  • provide free architect and design advice for the shopfront transformation
  • manage the planning application
  • pay any related admin fees
  • manage the works
  • work with businesses to minimise disruption to trade
  • publicise the project and promote the works

Examples of large-scale shopfront improvements:

  • decluttering lower level shopfronts
  • new fascia signage
  • new projecting awning
  • repainting of shopfronts
  • new window vinyls and visual merchandising
  • repainting and renovating or replacing shop frames
  • new security shutters
  • redecorating/plastering
  • decorative elements (for example tiling)

Small-scale improvements

Unfortunately, we do not have the funding to carry out significant improvements to all the shops in Turnpike Lane, but there are still opportunities for shops outside the priority areas to get involved. If your shop is outside the priority areas, you could still benefit from some smaller scale improvements. We will pay a contribution towards small scale works and can manage the installation as well.

Examples of small-scale shopfront improvements:

  • decluttering lower-level shopfronts
  • repainting of shopfronts
  • new window vinyls and visual merchandising

Hear what other business owners have to say

Gokhan, business owner of Spur Restaurant, North Tottenham Shopfront improvements – completed 2021:

The shop front is brand new, and they created a mosaic with a local school on the wall, it looks really nice, I’m happy. When [the locals] see the difference on the high road and that there is something new and good for local people, they are very excited. I’ve been receiving a lot of positive feedback about the renovations.

João Castro owner of restaurant Bom Pecado, West Green Road Shopfront improvements – completed 2015:

My shopfront didn’t look very nice and the improvements were fantastic. I was very impressed with the designs they came up with and people understand the design is about us. It helped my business and my customers like it. It is still in perfect condition.
