Supported housing for older people

The service is for older people aged 50+ with support needs. Younger applicants with severe disability may be considered. Homeowners and others with access to sufficient equity/capital to purchase more suitable accommodation may be excluded.

We provide unfurnished self-contained accommodation. Most of these are one-bedroom flats, but there are some bungalows and two-bedroom flats. They are all centrally heated with emergency alarms and most have secured entry-phone systems.

Support and assistance are provided by a hub coordinator and support workers. They will work with your individual needs and risks. We hope to empower people to live a more independent life. We support Homes for Haringey to deliver its support and wellbeing service based upon a hub and cluster model.

Eight of our schemes have been designated as support and well-being hubs, and offer an enhanced range of services. Other schemes will be managed as part of a “cluster” of schemes from the hubs. Residents at all schemes, whether living in a hub scheme or a cluster scheme will be able to access hub services, and all residents will continue to receive the same high quality support service tailored to their needs.

The service does not provide emergency accommodation.

What to expect

These schemes provide you with:

• your own self-contained accommodation
• independence - freedom to come and go as you please
• an alarm system for help in an emergency
• safe and secure surroundings, most with entry-phone systems
• a hub coordinator/support worker to provide regular support
• extra support as or when you need it, and
• social activities with people of a similar age

Who can apply to live in supported housing?

You can request an assessment to find out if you are eligible for supported housing. The request can be made by:

• yourself
• a relative or friend
• a social worker or housing officer
• your GP or a health visitor
• your community centre or day centre, and
• nomination from other councils

You need to have had a needs assessment before you can apply for sheltered housing.

Disabled access

Most supported housing schemes have disabled access. The assessments office is a home-visit based service, so you are also unlikely to ever need to visit the office. It does not have full disabled access.

Other housing options

• Shared Lives Shared Lives provides you with support and a home if you’re an adult needing a little extra help. You’ll be carefully matched with one of our specially trained Shared Lives carers and spend time in their home and local community. Your Shared Lives carer will support you to achieve your goals and live the way you want to live. You could share your days with a carer, stay for short breaks, or even move in and live with your live Shared Lives carer.
• Supported living services - these schemes offer you a home and a support package in a range of different accommodation types. Includes schemes for people with learning disabilities and mental health problems.
• Extra Care - a higher level of support for older people as an alternative to residential care.
• Living independently - equipment, adaptations and devices to help with daily tasks, so people can stay in their own homes for longer.
• Residential care homes - advice about choosing a nursing home or residential care home, including lists of homes and their Care Quality Commission rating.
