Book an appointment to register a death

You must register someone's death in the area where they died and not where they lived. We can only register someone's death if they died in Haringey. You must register the death within 5 days, unless a coroner is conducting an investigation into the circumstances.

You must make an appointment to register a death. All appointments are face-to-face and take place at Haringey Register Office.

If someone died in a hospital

There are no hospitals in Haringey. If the death was in a hospital, you must register the death with the relevant local council:

• if the death happened in North Middlesex Hospital – register the death with Enfield Council
• if the death happened in Whittington Hospital – register the death with Islington Council

What happens during your appointment

Your appointment should take 30 to 40 minutes but can take longer. We'll take you through the registration and issue a certificate for burial or cremation to the funeral director of your choice. We are not able to issue a certificate for cremation if there has been a post mortem or if the body is being transported outside of England. 

If a doctor has certified a death we will not be able to register if the doctor has not sent us a MCCD form confirming how the deceased died.

Please arrive in plenty of time for your appointment. Parking is extremely limited, so please consider alternative forms of transport. If you are late, regardless of any reason, you may not be seen.

If you need a funeral within 24 hours – urgent ceremonies 

We will do everything we can to help if a funeral needs to take place before the next working day.

Register a death after an inquest

If there has been an inquest (a type of court hearing to determine how a person died) there is no need to contact us to register the death. We will register the death without needing to book an appointment.

Once the inquest has been concluded, you can order a registration certificate.
