Give notice

Before getting married or forming a civil partnership, you must both give notice of intention at a register office, usually in the district or borough where you live.

Passport-sized photographs: if you or your partner are subject to immigration you must both bring a recent, passport-sized photograph with you.
To give notice at Haringey Register Office, you must have lived in Haringey for at least the previous 9 days. 

Notice must be given a minimum 29 and sometimes 71 days before your planned legal ceremony date. Notice can only be given in the area where you live. If one or both of you are subject to immigration you must both give notice at the same time to one of your councils.

Your appointment

All appointments to give notice take place at Haringey Register Office. At your appointment you will declare:

  • who you intend to marry or form a civil partnership with
  • where the ceremony will take place
  • that you are legally free to get married or form a civil partnership

Both you and your partner will be interviewed separately. Please arrange your own interpreter if you need one, as you will be unable to interpret for your partner.

Documents you will need to bring

You will have to bring along original documents to your appointment:

Proof of your Identity

  • a valid passport from any country (not expired)
  • a UK Travel Document issued by the UK Home Office
  • UK Citizens born before 1983 only - Original UK birth certificate
  • UK Driving License but only if not using it to prove your address

Proof of your address

  • a utility bill dated within the last three months (can be in PDF format on your electronic device)
  • A bank statement dated within the last one month (can be in PDF format on your electronic device)
  • mortgage statement dated within the last 12 months (can be in PDF format on your electronic device)
  • most recent Council Tax Bill (can be in PDF format on your electronic device)
  • valid UK Driving License registered to your current address

If you cannot provide one of the above documents to the required standard do not make an appointment until you have the required evidence. The legal period for residency for giving notice is seven clear days (nine days when adding in day of arrival and day of notice.

If you will only be in Haringey on a short stay, get a signed letter from the owner or proprietor of the premises where you will be staying confirming your stay. You will need to provide original evidence for them from the above list before their letter will be accepted. The letter must be dated immediately before the appointment 

Proof any previous marriage or civil partnership has ended

Original divorce or annulment document with a full third party translation if the document is not written in English

Recent passport sized photos

One recent passport sized photo each if either of you are subject to immigration and you do not have indefinite leave to remain or EU settled or pre settled status.

Proof of your immigration status

Please bring evidence of any UK immigration status. Proof will typically take the form of a Share Code. More information about proving your UK immigration status can be found on GOV.UK.

Weddings in places of worship

Depending on where you are getting married, different rules apply. If you're getting married:

  • in a Church of England or Church of Wales building, contact the church where you plan to have your ceremony to check what you must do
  • in any other place of worship, you must give notice

If you're subject to immigration control

Being subject to immigration means that you or your partner:

  • has a valid UK visa or entry clearance including a visa to marry or form a civil partnership
  • has indefinite leave to remain (ILR)
  • has no status in the UK including people who are overstayers
  • is an asylum seeker
  • is a European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA) national or a partner of an EU/EEA national without settled status/pre-settled status who applied after 30 June 2021 under the EU Settled Status Scheme on GOV.UK
