Harvey's journey from supported internship to employment

Harvey began his journey with us as one of the first interns in our Supported Internship Programme (2023-2024). After finishing college with a Level Two qualification in bricklaying, he faced challenges navigating the job market independently.

“Before joining the Supported Internship Programme, I had just finished my studies and was a student, focusing on gaining knowledge and developing skills in various subjects.”

Joining the Supported Internship Programme

Harvey spent the year-long programme gaining hands-on experience in various roles, including customer service, IT support, and administrative tasks. “I didn’t have any previous work experience, and I felt it was important to gain practical skills and build my confidence in a professional setting. Joining the Supported Internship Programme seemed like a great opportunity to get hands-on experience and explore different career paths while receiving support and guidance.”

The internship rotations provided valuable insights into different work environments, from independent tasks at New River Leisure Centre to collaborative roles in administration and IT. Harvey's favourite part of the programme was transitioning from administrative tasks to IT roles, which helped him gain confidence and a sense of accomplishment.

The support from job coaches, including regular check-ins and guidance, was crucial in helping Harvey stay on track and meet the requirements of his tasks. Although he initially struggled with the structure and demands of a work environment, Harvey adapted over time with the help of his coaches and colleagues. “I struggled during my first rotations because I was transitioning straight from school and wasn’t used to the structure and demands of a work environment. However, with time, I adapted by seeking guidance from my job coaches and colleagues, which helped me build confidence and improve my ability to handle tasks in a professional setting.”

Developing life skills and building confidence

During the programme, I developed key customer service skills, including how to interact with customers in a professional and friendly manner. I also learned effective communication techniques, both in person and over the phone, ensuring clear and respectful exchanges with colleagues and clients.

The skills I gained during the programme have given me a clearer understanding of the expectations and responsibilities of a job. I now have a better idea of what’s needed from me to perform effectively, which will help me feel more confident and prepared in my new role.

One moment I felt particularly proud was during my time in the administration role, when I dedicated a lot of effort and time to completing projects and supporting apprenticeships. When my managers and mentors expressed their satisfaction with my work, it gave me a real sense of accomplishment and pride in what I had achieved.

First job success

Harvey recently secured his first job! In his new role, he is responsible for replenishing stock, ensuring shelves are tidy, and assisting with customer service.

Since starting his new job, Harvey has gained more structure in his week, making him feel more organised and focused. Earning money has brought a sense of relief, allowing him to plan for the future and take on new opportunities.

Harvey advises others to join the Supported Internship Programme, emphasising the valuable skills, confidence, and opportunities it provides. He feels much more confident about his future, knowing he has more options going forward.
