English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) courses are for people whose first language is not English.

At Wood Green library we offer day and evening classes that require you to attend twice a week. Some courses may be a full day.

You can take ESOL courses if you’re not an English speaker and you:

  • are new to living in the UK
  • want to get a job
  • want to improve your chances at work
  • want to become more independent
  • want to improve your English speaking, listening, reading or writing skills

All our courses will grow your communication skills and introduce you to life in the UK.

New starters/pre-entry

This course is for anyone who: 

  • needs help to begin speaking or writing in English
  • needs help to write using the English alphabet

Beginners/entry 1

This course is for you if you’ve started to learn some English but are still at beginner level.

You’ll practise your language skills so you can:

  • talk to your doctor
  • speak to a teacher at school
  • get a job

The course will help you to better understand life in the UK and is a step to becoming more independent.

Improvers/entry 2

his course is ideal for learners who have studied some English in the past, or are able to understand and communicate at a basic level.

You’ll practise your:

  • writing
  • communication
  • grammar

This will help you to:

  • speak with more confidence
  • understand letters
  • apply for jobs that need you to speak English

Intermediate/entry 3

This course is for learners who have a better level of English.  

This means you can: 

  • speak, listen, read and write in English  
  • use present, past and future verbs correctly 

The course will improve your: 

  • reading and writing
  • speaking and listening skills
  • job skills

Advanced/level 1 and level 2

This course is for learners who can: 

  • speak confidently  
  • write accurately  
  • use past, present and future tenses  

The course will help you to: 

  • improve your chances of getting a job  
  • use your qualifications from your own country  
  • join higher education 

Extra activities for ESOL learners

ESOL learners have taken part in lots of activities outside the classroom, including group trips to:

  • the National Theatre
  • Jackson’s Lane Theatre
  • Museum of London
  • Museum of Childhood
  • Bruce Castle
