School Nursing
Every school has a school nurse attached to them who will be able to help you if you are concerned about your child’s development, for example their growth, weight, toileting, medications or their emotional development. They are responsible for telling the school when a child has been identified as having a medical condition which will require support in school. Wherever possible, they do this before the child starts at the school.
They may support staff in writing a child’s individual healthcare plan, and also provide advice and liaison, for example on training school staff.
School nurses can liaise with consultant Paediatricians and other specialist staff on appropriate support for your child and associated staff training needs.
If your child is returning to school following a period of hospital education or alternative provision (including home tuition), the schools might need to contact the SEN department on sen@haringey.gov.uk. The SEN department and local school nursing service will work together to identify the support your child might need to come back to school.
In Haringey the local authority teams audit the schools training and skills for managing children’s medical needs, and work with the school nursing service to make sure the local schools are confident when managing children’s needs.
Please ask your school SENCO if you would like to speak to your school nurse.
The Special Schools Nursing Service ensures staff and families are able to manage their children’s medical needs such as medications.
