Pupils and staff at Greig City Academy (GCA) have been marking Refugee Week’s 25th anniversary and they’ve really got behind this year’s theme of compassion and – more specifically – what it looks like in action.
GCA staff, students and family members have joined forces to take part in The Bike Project’s challenge ‘Refugee Routes.’ They have been collectively cycling the same number of miles as a refugee’s journey to safety. They chose the 918-mile route from Syria to Turkey for these sponsored, stationary bike rides.
Other Refugee Week activities and events at GCA this week have included: a sponsored skipping session; Year 7 students posting messages of support on a Tree of Compassion; a showing of the film ‘The Swimmers’ – the story of Syrian sisters Sara and Yusra Mardini who took a boat to Europe and became refugees before the latter (Yusra) went on to reach the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as a member of the Refugee Olympic Athletes Team and a showcase debate on whether the United Nations (UN) should widen the definition of ‘refugee.’
They will also be cycling from GCA to Trent Park for a picnic today (Sunday 25 June 2023), as well as donating bikes to be refurbished for refugees.
Very well done to all over at Greig City Academy!
