Sadiq Khan joined Haringey Council Leader Cllr Peray Ahmet, Deputy Mayor for Housing Tom Copley, Haringey’s youth leaders and local MPs, Catherine West and Bambos Charalambous, to meet families benefiting from the 272 high-quality, energy efficient homes at Wingspan Walk today (Friday 30 January).
Haringey’s award-winning housebuilding programme has been identified as the second biggest in the country for building the most social rent homes and is on track to deliver at least 3,000 council homes by 2031.
The Wingspan Walk scheme, which is one of the largest in the programme, has been supported by £43.5m in City Hall funding to help transform a former disused brownfield site into a vibrant, green residential neighbourhood. All homes in the Passivhaus scheme will be allocated to residents on Haringey Council’s housing register.
Leader of Haringey Council, Cllr Peray Ahmet, said:
“This is a historic day for our borough. Reaching the 1,000 milestone as part of our commitment to provide a new generation of genuinely affordable, high-quality homes at council rent is a significant achievement and one we should be proud of.
“Action speaks louder than words and we have delivered on our pledge to build council homes at council rents. I want to thank the Mayor of London and GLA for their continued support and helping us to transform the lives of our residents.
“Wingspan Walk is a great example of how council homes can be spacious, sustainable, and affordable to run, and I’m delighted we remain on track to deliver at least 3,000 by 2031 as we turn the tide on the housing crisis.
“The hard work will not stop here. We are also injecting almost £600m over ten years to drive up the comfort and quality of all our 20,000 council homes in Haringey and are committed to creating a fairer, greener and inclusive borough.”
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said:
“I'm delighted to be in Haringey today to mark the completion of 1,000 new, high-quality, green council homes in the borough
“This is a great achievement and I want to thank the Council Leader, Peray Ahmet, for her hard work and commitment towards reaching this milestone and providing her residents with affordable, high-quality homes
“I am proud to have invested £43.5 million to support the development of these social rent homes at Wingspan Walk, helping those most in need to put down roots in the local community.
“This development is one of the great successes of our Affordable Homes Programme and this year we are encouraging housing providers to bid for a record investment of £11.7 billion to deliver social and affordable housing across London. I expect to see plenty more council homes, like we’re seeing here in Haringey, built across London as a result.
“Tackling our urgent housing crisis is a top priority and I will continue working closely with local councils and the government to boost housebuilding as we build a better and fairer London for everyone.”
Located close to Tottenham Hale station, Wingspan Walk provides new entrances into Down Lane Park, with 74 additional trees planted on the site and shrubbery that will improve the landscape and support wildlife.
Responsibly sourced and environmentally friendly materials are being used in the construction of this Passivhaus scheme, which delivers exceptional energy efficiency, ensuring low running costs and a comfortable environment through features like high insulation, triple glazing and heat recovery ventilation.
The council’s programme has seen a number of landmark projects completed across the borough, including Walter Tull House in Tottenham Hale delivering 131 homes at council rent, Nilgun Canver Court in Wood Green providing 80 homes and Watts Close in Tottenham – the council’s first zero carbon development.
Each new development is built to high standards and, where possible, seeks to deliver enhanced green spaces and biodiversity improvements that benefit the whole community.
