Who we are

Haringey Council is the data controller for the personal information you provide as part of your housing needs assessment.

Why we collect your data

We collect and use your personal data to assess your housing needs and fulfil our statutory duties as a local authority.

The lawful basis for processing your data is:

  • Article 6(1)(e) UK GDPR: Processing is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest or in the exercise of official authority (our statutory duties under the Housing Act 1985 and the Housing Act 1996 (as amended by the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017))
  • Article 9(2)(g) UK GDPR: For special category data, including information about your health, processing is necessary for reasons of substantial public interest, on the basis of UK law

The data we collect

We collect:

  • your name and contact details
  • details of your household, housing history and current accommodation
  • your date of birth and National Insurance number
  • your employment, income and savings
  • your immigration status
  • health or disability information (where relevant)
  • any other information that is relevant to your specific support needs

How we collect your data

When you contact us we will ask you questions to understand your circumstances and why you are asking for help. We will ask you to complete a form and we may also ask you to provide documents to support your application.

To process your application and assess your housing needs, we may need to gather relevant information from other council services and from external organisations (such as your landlord, your GP and other health professionals, social care providers and other support agencies).

This means we will contact them to confirm information that you have provided to us and/or to ask them to share information about you or your household that is relevant to your application.

We ask for your consent or agreement to do this.

Without your agreement, we may not be able to fully assess your housing needs and your case may be closed.

Data accuracy and fraud prevention

It is important that the information you provide to Haringey Council as part of your housing needs assessment is accurate and up to date. Under Section 74 of the Housing Act 1985, it is an offence to knowingly or recklessly provide false information, or to withhold relevant information. Doing so could affect your eligibility for housing assistance and could result in prosecution.

You are also required to notify us without delay of any changes in your circumstances that may affect your application.

To protect public funds and ensure the integrity of our services, the information you provide may also be used for the prevention and detection of fraud.

Your rights

You have the right to:

  • ask for a copy of your data
  • ask for a correction of anything that is not accurate
  • ask us to stop using your data (in some circumstances)
  • ask us to delete your data (in some circumstances)

You also have the right to make a complaint to us if you think we have not handled your personal data responsibly, and to make a complaint to the Information Commissioner’s Officer.
