Inclusive Martial Arts: Elevated Youth's Journey to Bruce Grove Youth Hub
Last month, members of Elevated Youth Haringey undertook a journey from their usual meeting spot at Rising Green Youth Hub to Bruce Grove Youth Club. Their purpose was to explore the club's weekly free martial arts session tailored for young people with disabilities.
These classes, provided by Sanjuro Martial Arts, have been developed in collaboration with and for disabled people. The emphasis is on creating a highly inclusive environment, enabling individuals with diverse abilities to engage and participate at the same time. All drills and exercises are purposefully designed to foster the skills and capabilities of each participant within a dynamic, enjoyable, and controlled environment. Family members, including parents and siblings, are encouraged to join in!
Elevated Youth members thoroughly enjoyed the martial arts experience, highlighting their appreciation for the hands-on guidance from the instructor in learning various drills and moves.
After the session, Zak and Andrew shared their thoughts.
Zak said: "It was quite fun and tough."
"I'm Andrew; I am here at Bruce Grove Youth Space. I just did Sanjuro and I really liked it because it was fun, you learn techniques like self-defence and other things. I really enjoyed it and recommend Sanjuro for young people. It's really good, although it's really intense. I think whoever does it will really like it."
The free classes occur every Wednesday from 5.30pm to 6.30pm at Bruce Grove Youth Hub, 10 Bruce Grove, Tottenham N17 6RA.
