Haringey Youth Panels visit Parliament
On 30 July 2024, members of the Haringey Youth Panels, including Elevated Youth, a group for young people with SEND, and the Wider Youth Panel visited the Houses of Parliament. The visit was an inspiring opportunity for young people to learn how the UK Parliament and democracy function today, preparing them for future engagements with leaders and politicians. This initiative aims to empower them with the knowledge and skills essential for their future success.
The day included:
- A historical and educational tour.
- A 30-minute workshop on law and policymaking.
- The chance to observe debates in both the House of Lords and the House of Commons.
A key moment was the meeting with Bambos Charalambous, the Labour MP for Wood Green and Southgate. During this session, the young people shared their personal experiences and challenges as residents of Haringey and as individuals with SEND.
The discussion covered several important themes, including concerns about knife crime and gentrification, the need for more safe youth spaces in Haringey, employment opportunities, and the importance of having a voice within the council and those with influence. Bambos Charalambous commented:
"Great to speak to members of Haringey Youth Council and Elevated Youth Haringey, a forum for young people with SEND. I heard about the challenges young people with SEND face, such as accessible youth activities and SEND funding. I'll fight for more opportunities for youth in Haringey."
